INTERVIEW Fernando Savater
by DA COSTA GUILLERMO

(Picture: and Savater Cioran in Paris.
Source: Fernando Savater: Look where . Autobiography reasoned, Punto de Lectura, Madrid, 2004)

1. I dedicate a website (a blog in particular, in English) to the study of Cioran. Without wishing to compare it with what was his magnificent dissertation on the Romanian philosopher (Essay on Cioran , Espasa-Calpe, Madrid, 1992), what do you think of my impertinence blogger?

Fernando Savater: I think well, it serves to keep alive and controversial work of one of the thinkers really "different" from the past century.

2. For when, as suggested in Look where. reasoned Autobiography (Punto de Lectura, Madrid, 2004), published his correspondence with Cioran?

FS: I posted a couple of letters in the number of "L'Herne " dedicated to Cioran, who incidentally is terrific. The rest, for now, remain preserved ...

3. In his youth, Cioran "wanted to be somebody" and then not fail to insist that we are nothing (but loath to admit, as I said Josep Pla). And yet I think he also had his "involvement" literary ...

FS: No doubt. His passion for style, as he confessed, and I confessed more than once ... Nobody writes like him if he did not care to write well. He was also very aware of himself and quite likely ...

4. No intention to upset the interview: "The nightmare is the only way to lucidity "(Cioran)?

FS: I think the clarity is not terrible or blessed: The Nightmare is a way to take it, depends on the mood and perhaps the moment that everyone ...

5. If "all clarity is the result of a loss" (Cioran), is an exaggeration to say that the clarity of Cioran is the result of an unhappy youth sentimental (I remember that he refers to that episode [so nothing trivial] in some text) ?

FS: The big disappointment is Cioran religious, in my opinion. I wanted to be religious believers, even mystical ... but his intellectual honesty and sincerity sensual stopped him. Never recovered from that disappointment.

6. Cioran confessed that his two passions were reading and cycling. You talked about that passion once (which I also share with him) for cycling?

FS: once told me in his usual humorous tone, his experiences in that field. We had much fun being mentioned in a radio program about the pioneers of cycling in France. Moreover, I've been a huge fan of elite cycling (the Tour, Giro, etc..), but I never knew riding a bike, you see.
