VITALITY OF LOVE INTERVIEW

Joaquín Garrigues INTERVIEW WITH GUILLERMO by DA COSTA

The Romanian-language literary translator Joaquin Garrigós has been kind enough to answer a brief interview. Garrigós has translated three works written in Romanian Cioran: The Decline of thought (1995), The book of chimeras (1996) and the vanquished Breviary (1998), all published by Tusquets.
1. You have translated into Castilian much of the bulk of the work of Cioran Romanian. How did you get the job? Was then aware of the value of the work of Cioran? I have translated three books from a total of six he wrote in Romanian. The order arrived just after starting my career as a translator of Romanian literature in Spain. It was the first to translate directly from the Romanian. Until then, Cioran Romanian books had been translated from French. This reached the ears of Tusquets and came to me through the editorial where I had published. Yes, obviously knew who he was Cioran and its importance in European thought.
2. What about the style of Cioran, and the difficulties of translating from Romanian to English? Cioran is very difficult to translate, a challenge for any translator. Cioran breaks the language, not be subject to academic rules, gives the words a different sense than they have in the language. Language is an anarchist. He confesses that he began to write in French had to submit to rules of which formerly he had fled. But watch out, that does not mean to write badly. Far from it, Cioran pushes the boundaries of language where no one had been before and is evidence the richness of language and its enormous expressive power.
3. What, in his view, the current relevance of Cioran on the landscape of Romanian literature? How strong is in terms of influence on other writers?
Actually, Cioran is not a writer but a thinker. In Romania is highly valued as an intellectual, though in some sectors is critical of nihilism that took on Romania for a long time and his refusal to write and speak Romanian. Even his own brother wrote in French.
As for influence, not being my field of philosophy could not answer.
would like to add that I find it odd that the book has been published that, in my view, is the best: The Transfiguration of Romania , written in 1935, the only one that remains to be translated into English. Neither the correspondence and newspaper articles.
